It’s a common criticism from women that men do not take enough time over foreplay, so that she’s not sufficiently aroused for sex.
A good male lover will be able to judge how aroused she is by picking up signs of arousal from the first, subtle signs of arousal to the stage when she is fully aroused and has reached her Orgasmic Plateau.
First signs of arousal
Imagine a couple sitting in a café. Subtle signs that a woman is becoming aroused include her touching the man in a non-sexual area, perhaps brushing away an imaginary speck of fluff from his clothes, or seemingly to take an intense interest in what he’s saying or doing. She may not be sexually aroused, but she’s sexually interested.
Flushed, red lips
When a couple reach the stage of sexual foreplay, signs that a woman is becoming aroused include changes in breathing, gasping and colour changes around her face neck and chest. Her nipples may swell and harden, her nostrils may flare and her pupils dilate. A woman’s lips can also swell and become flushed red (surely this is one “psychological” reason why women wear lipstick – it’s a subtle sign to the man of her attractiveness).
Full arousal and lubrication
When a woman becomes fully aroused there are a number of outward signs: the most obvious sexual responses being swollen nipples and swollen vaginal lips (called the labia) which may also darken in colour. Typically her vagina will become very moist, although some women do have problems becoming fully lubricated, even though they may be very aroused, in which case the couple will need to use a lubricating jelly (e.g. KY Jelly) for sex to be comfortable. A dry vagina can be an uncomfortable experience for both the man and the woman.
Signs she’s reached her orgasmic plateau
Women, when they become sufficiently aroused, reach an orgasmic plateau where further stimulation can cause them to have an orgasm. A man can detect when a woman reaches this orgasmic plateau by changes in the way she grasps and holds him with her hands, and also with her arms and legs. Women display a sense of urgency and impatience when they are almost at the point of orgasm.
Whereas a man typically moves through this point at speed to having an orgasm, women seem to have the ability to linger and tremble at this preorgasmic point. The sensitised man will detect this behaviours and either seek to extend it by gentle, understated lovemaking or cause her to orgasm by firing one or more “orgasmic triggers”
